Sunrise from Neolithic Long Barrow

Archaeological Features

The farm has lots of archaeology within it, including a Neolithic long barrow, Bronze Age round barrows, Medieval field boundaries and a possible Roman windmill. These archaeological features are all covered by grass and were identified from aerial photographs of the area. The Neolithic long barrow is aligned with a series of other monuments in the surrounding landscape, including West Kennett Long Barrow, which is still standing.

Sarah is passionate about archaeology and has a BSc in Archaeology and an MSc in Geoarchaeology and was an archaeological consultant between 2009 and 2017. We therefore allowed Historic England to carry out a geophysical survey of the site in 2022. The survey identified clear remains of the Neolithic long barrow and perhaps one day we will have it excavated to learn more.

White Barrow Farm

The long barrow is located on top of our hill on the farm. The hill has historically been know as White Barrow Hill, hence why we chose the name White Barrow Farm. The reason the hill was given this name was that the land would have been ploughed during the Medieval period, We are located on chalk geology so the remains of the long barrow would have appeared as a White Barrow on the hill.
